Acetyl-L-carnitine
(ALCAR) is the acetylated ester derivative of the amino
acid L-carnitine. It has been shown in research studies
to have protective effects on the brain and helps to release
the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. It may also act as
a potent anti-oxidant in the brain. Researchers believe
that ALCAR improves cognition by enhancing the activity
of acetylcholine and/or improving neuronal metabolism.
It has been shown to have some anti-catabolic effects
as well by preventing the decrease in plasma testosterone
levels after chronic exercise stress.
ALCAR is literally a 'Miracle' Amino Acid:
ALCAR has been shown to increase IGF levels(2). This is
good for anyone wanting to build muscle, or tone up. It
also can reverse DNA damage in the mitochondria(3). This
is extremely critical as the miotochondria is where aging
is taking place due to lack of endogenous DNA repair mechanisms.
ALCAR acts as the missing repair mechanism. When rats,
and humans are stressed, cortisol levels rise, and Testosterone
drops! This change in hormone levels is what leads to
disease and aging. Yet even under stress, which reduced
Testosterone levels, ALCAR kept them up(4). It can also
have a positive effect on the testes(5) , aiding older
men and bodybuilders in post cycle recovery. ALCAR is
effective at doses as low as 1,000mg up to 10,000 mg (taken
