Q. Is more really better with supplements?
A. It depends on what the science shows. In most cases, more than what leading brand name products put in their formula's is better. Take ALCAR for example: this nutrient is amazing, and the science backs it up - only often the effective dose is in the range of 2-5 grams per day. Most products on the market have only 200-500 milligrams (0.2-0.5 grams) of ALCAR, not enough to reap the rewards. In some cases, like anti-oxidants for example, up to a certain point it is specualted that they can become pro-oxidants. This means they may increase free radical generation, not hinder it. But this is at very high levels of intake, more than anyone would normally consume. Safe to say, Linus Pauling, Nobel Prize winner, advocated 10 grams (10,000 milligrams) per day of Vitamin C - and recent research shows he was right all along.

Q. Is taking these products in higher doses safe?
A. Yes. Many or all of these products have been involved in scientific studies, often where blood tests were taken of subjects. None had any toxic effects, even at high doses. Also, lab tests in animals have also demonstrated safety. In addition, Federal tracking of toxicity and poisoning data shows natural supplements are virtually free of causing toxicity& poisoning. Often 'experts' from the medical community will claim that these products can be toxic. Vitamin A is often used as an example. Yet they fail to state that they are referring to a certain type of Vitamin A, the fat soluble form (Vit. A Palmitate). The only recorded reactions to this nutrient came from several people who had eaten Polar Bear livers, which have the highest amount of the vitamin than any other food. In addition, the form of Vitamin A used most often is the non-toxic water soluble form; Beta-Carotene.

Q. Are nutritional supplements acting like drugs in higher doses?
A. Supplements and Drugs have very different properties in the body. Supplements are almost always substances found in our diet naturally. Therefore our bodies have evolved for hundreds of thousands of years with these compounds, and have created the proper metabolic pathways for their use, recycling and excretion. In higher doses, supplements can exert 'drug-like' effects on the body, by enhancing natural processes and functions in the body. Yet they rarely demonstrate a burden or toxicity on the body. At higher doses used to treat specific diseases like cancer for example, they can at times have side-effects. But these are usually mild.
Drugs are very interesting - they are often derived from natural substances. The difference here is that, to make money off them, companies have to alter them, so they can patent them, yet still enable them to effect the body in a desired manner. Altering a natural compound into a drug makes the compound foreign to the body. The body has not evolved to deal with the new form the drug presents, so this creates extra work for the body. Often this leads to toxicity, and other side-effects drugs are well known for.

Q. What about supplements that contain Ephedra for example?
A. KiloHealth is ambivalent on the long term use of Ephedra, not because it has been shown to be unsafe, but because we feel chronic stimulation of the stress response in the body can lead to altered Adrenal function, and perhaps even Chronic Fatigue Syndrome(CFS). The research shows ephedra is safe. Even a quick glance at the science, and quotes from top researchers shows this is another case of media-distortion. Also it seems, the FDA seeking to control and limit the natural supplement industry from profiting where drug companies want to:
*The International Journal of Obesity recently published the results of a six-month study of herbal thermogenic supplements, stating that ephedra/caffeine combination "...promoted body weight and body fat reduction and improved blood lipids without significant adverse events.
** Wes Siegner, an attorney with Hyman, Phelps and McNamara, noted that the 1999 AHPA International Ephedra Symposium, "presented data showing exceptional spikes in adverse event reports filed in the days immediately following FDA press releases and media coverage of ephedra". It seems there was no problem before the FDA started issuing scary and misleading press releases about ephedrine. Then came the flood of adverse event reports....
Remember that Ephedrine and caffeine (or theophylline) have been used safely for decades as an over-the-counter drug for asthma, bronchitis, etc. "

Q. How do you take powdered products -- how is the dose measured?
A.Powdered products are generally taken with water or juice or mixed in food. You can either mix the powder in with water or you can put the powder in your mouth and wash it down with water. Some people find mixing powders in with applesauce is a good alternative. Some nutrients are taken on an empty stomach-this is indicated on the label. Powdered products are measured in milligrams per teaspoon. Most items are measured in 1/2 to 1 teaspoon doses. A teaspoon is about 2-4 grams (2,000-4,000 mg). Due to density fluctuation, measuring spoon equivalents are approximate. For those requiring extremely accurate dose, we recommend measuring by weight with an appropriately accurate scale or otherwise using capsules or tabs.

Q. My product taste's sour, what can I do?
A. You can try mixing it with juice or apple sauce to mask the taste. We also put many items in our protein shakes. If this does not work, we also offer capsule machines, and will even encapsulate your order.

Another trick we use is to buy capsules and scoop in the desired amount into a capsule prior to taking it. For example, with Alpha Lipoic Acid, we scoop out a 100-150 mg dose and then open a capsule. We place the end of the open capsule in the powder, scooping it in. Or we place the powder in a paper funnel and shimmy it into the empty capsule. Then close the capsule and its ready!
Q. Are you nutritionists or health professionals?
A. No, and legally we are not allowed to recommend products for the treatment of disease or a specific condition. We must state that the FDA requires us to say that none of our products are intended to treat any disease or disorder. We encourage our customers to be their own best health advocates and take advantage of the wide range of literature available to them. Our owner has been involved in the industry for well over 18 years, and is always happy to pass on information that he finds informative and helpful.

Q. What is your privacy policy?
A. We never share, sell or rent our mailing lists to anyone. This includes our email lists. We do not do bulk email mailings with email addresses listed, so you are safe there, too. We cherish our privacy and respect the privacy of our customers equally.

Q. I heard Vitamin C in high doses was bad and could cause cancer.
A. This is not true. There are over 10,000 studies on the efficacy of Vitamin C in the literature. This claim is based on one recent study published in Nature that showed Vitamin C in doses over 500 mg caused oxidative stress instead of acting as an anti-oxidant. For an analysis of this, please read a critique of the study by the Director of the Linus Pauling Institute.

The drug model is flawed on many levels. MAn has evolved with plants for millions of years, so plant nutrients and herbs are recognized by our bodies as natural and our bodies have evolved processes to metabolize these compounds. Drugs also harm the environment, and accumulate in the food chain. Recent studies have shown trace amounts of drugs in people who never took the drugs, and the cause was that many drugs do not bio-degrade and enter into the water supply. Drugs also cause damage to plants and animals, resulting in deformities and leading species to lower populations.
