Isoleucine, along with leucine and valine, comprise the branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), so-named for their molecular structures. The BCAAs are dietary essential amino acids, and fulfil numerous important roles in skeletal muscle, including the regulation of protein synthesis and as substrates in energy-yielding pathways.
