PHOSPHATIDYLSERINE

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a phospholipid found in the lipid bilayer of cells. Phospholipids are distributed asymmetrically in the two leaflets of the membrane bilayer in normal cells. PS is found hidden in the cytoplasmic face of the inner leaflet.

As components of the cell membrane, PS and other phospholipids participate in a diverse range of cellular signalling cascades. Of particular interest to many consumers of PS supplements are those involving cognitive function. Thus, PS supplements have been touted as nutritional devices to enhance memory, treat Alzheimer's, and more. In regards to Alzheimer's, PS seems to be more effective than choline or phosphatidylcholine at increasing the availability of acetylcholine (a neutransmitter which is severaly reduced in patients with this disease). Bodybuilders have also used PS in an effort to increase muscle mass by reducing cortisol levels.

The availability of the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexanoic acid (DHA) is associated with PS content in the brain: As DHA levels fall, so too do the levels of PS.
