VINPOCETINE
Is synthetic derivative of vincamine, an alkaloid obtained from the periwinkle plant (Vinca minor). Vincamine has generally been investigated in the treatment of blood circulation disturbances, though vinpocetine is frequently marketed as a 'nootropic', or cognitive enhancer. Clinically, vinpocetine is considered a neuroprotective agent in the treatment of cerebrovascular disease. It is absorbed following oral administration in humans and appears throughout the brain.
Vinpocetine displays antioxidant properties and may protect cells against excess calcium accmulation. It is an inhibitor of type I phosphodiesterases, thereby elevating intracellular levels of the second messenger molecule, cyclic AMP (cAMP). This may explain vinpocetine's documented vasorelaxing properties, which may be useful in the treatment of cerebrovascular disease (e.g., stroke, dementia) and bladder dysfunction.
Suggested Doses
